Alysh – Traditional Kyrgyz belt wrestling.
The roots of alysh stretch way back into the ancient history of Kyrgyzstan. This is considered to be one of the most ancient games of the Kyrgyz people.
Wrestlers wear special green or blue jackets, with white trousers and red belts.
At the start, wrestlers rest their heads on the opponent’s shoulder, and then bend forward and grab the opponent’s belt with both hands, putting left hands over right. The main part of the match is held in standing position, and the goal is to pin the opponent down by holding his belt.
Teams are made up of 14 people: 6 male and 6 female wrestlers, one coach and one judge. Wrestlers over 18 can participate.
Competitions are held in the following weight categories:
Men: 60 kg, 70 kg, 80 kg, 90 kg, 100 kg, 100+ kg.
Women: 55 kg, 60 kg, 65 kg, 70 kg, 75 kg, 75+ kg.
